This is the best time to do anything 4 powerful secrets from research

This is the best time to do anything 4 powerful secrets from researchThis is the best time to do anything 4 powerful secrets from researchWe love to say timing is everything but often we sure as heck dont act like it. (Bookstores have an entire how to section but elend a when to section.)As were going to find out, timing really can be everything. And often weve got it all wrong. Luckily, bestselling authorDan Pinkhas come to the rescue. His new book isWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing. Its loaded with information on the best time to do almostanything- including the best time to get married. (You might wanna tie the knot between 25 and 32.)FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timingan American who weds at twenty-five is 11 percent less likely to divorce than one who marries at age twenty-four, according to analysis by University of Utah sociologist Nicholas Wolfinger. past the age of thirty-two even after controlling for religion, education, geographic location, and other factors the odds of divorceincreaseby 5 percent per year for at least the next decade. And if youre already married, try and be extra nice in March and achter monat des jahres - thats when divorce filings consistently shoot up.Ever have to give someone good news and bad news? Dan reports that you should deliver the bad newsbeforethe good news.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingSeveral studies over several decades have found that roughly four out of five people prefer to begin with a loss or negative outcome and ultimately end with a gain or positive outcome, rather than the reverse.Theres no way I could cover all the great insights in the book, so were going to focus on how to use Dans findings to be more productive and effective during the day.All your hours are not created equal - not by a long shot.Do think-y stuff in the morningAnything requiring you to be at your most rational and analytical should be done early in the day. This is a very robust finding w ith mountains of studies to back it up.Researchers usually just present data - they dont often give explicit recommendations. But the writers of one paper Dan cites found their results so overwhelming they just came right out and told people what to do - make important decisionsearly.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingAn important takeaway from our study for corporate executives is that communications with investors, and probably other critical managerial decisions and negotiations, should be conducted earlier in the day.Maybe youre thinking, Meh. Im sure its not that big a deal if I wait until after lunch. Wrong. You might as well pound a few beers before sitting down to work - thats how big the wertzuwachs difference can be.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingThe performance change between the daily high point and the daily low point can be equivalent to the effect on performance of drinking the legal limit of alcohol, according to Russell Foster, a ne uroscientist and chronobiologist at the University of Oxford. And this jives with previous research.Dan Arielyof Duke University found that mornings really are magical for getting stuff doneit turns out that most people are productive in the first two hours of the morning. Not immediately after waking, but if you get upat 7 youll be most productive from around from 8-1030.You know what else Arielys research found? We usually waste most of that golden time with email and Facebook. Bad. Mornings are when you want to handle your most important tasks.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling bookhere.)So mornings are magic. But whats the latter half of the day good for?Afternoons are sluggish - but insightfulOne study found that 255PM is very likely the mostun-productive moment of your day.Researchers refer to mornings as the peak and afternoons as the trough. Youre probably thinking about how that negatively impacts your work.Well, dont just yetThin k about how it affectsotherpeoples work. I, for one, am never going to a doctors office in the afternoon for the rest of my life.Anesthesiologists commit three times as many errors that result in patient harm during the latter half of the day. (Errors by a surgeon are pretty scary. Errors where somebody puts you to sleep and you never wake up areterrifying.)The number of studies that show just how much stupider and less in control we are during the afternoon is staggering. The No. 1 time for sleep-relatedcar accidents is, unsurprisingly, late at night when people are exhausted. Guess when No. 2 is? Not rush hour or morning commute when the most cars are on the road - its between 2PM and 4PM. All around the world.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingIn the United Kingdom, sleep-related vehicle accidents peak twice during every twenty-four-hour period. One is between 2AM and 6AM, the middle of the night. The other is between 2PM and 4PM, the middle of the afternoon. Resear chers have found the same pattern of traffic accidents in the U.S., Israel, Finland, France, and other countries. After the morning ends, were a bit of mess. But there is an upsideWhen your brain is tired, creativity jumps. Those misfiring neurons arent as rational but theyre much more likely to come up with new ideas.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingSome have called this phenomenon the inspiration paradox the idea that neuheit and creativity are greatest when we are not at our best, at least with respect to our circadian rhythms. So you might want to come up with new plans in the afternoon - and execute them the next morning.(To learn the seven-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, clickhere.)I know theres a group of people right now who are vigorously shaking their heads at all of the above I amnotsharper in the morning Im a zombie. Its takes four hours before my brain even starts working.Im not talking about the sleep-deprived (theyre a mess all da y long.) Im talking about night owls. And guess what? Theyre right.Strike that - reverse itIf youre a night owl, take everything I just said and reverse it.(Night owls who only read the very beginning of this post received somereallybad advice. I feel no guilt. Thats what you get for not reading to the end. Nyah.)Larks (early risers) and third birds (people who are neither extreme) peak in the morning, have a trough in the afternoon and then experience a period of recovery. For night owls, itsrecovery, trough, peak.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingIn short, all of us experience the day in three stages a peak, a trough, and a recovery. And about three-quarters of us (larks and third birds) experience it in that order. But about one in four people, those whose genes or age make them night owls, experience the day in something closer to the reverse order recovery, trough, peak. And sure enough, night owls get into more car accidents during their morning commute.FromWhe n The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingEven though its obviously more dangerous to drive at night, owls actually drive worse early in the day because mornings are out of synch with their natural cycle of vigilance and alertness. If youre a child of the night, plan creative tasks for the morning and critical thinking for the afternoon. And dont drive anywhere near where Im at until 2PM.(To learn how to stop being lazy and get more done, clickhere.)While very interesting, all this information can also be upsetting. If you have little control over your schedule, youre going to be doing a lot of stuff at suboptimal times. And if your job doesnt involve much creativity, is half the day just wasted? How do we turn that trough into more of a peak? The answer is simple take breaks. But whats really interesting is there is more than one type of break that we need. The two types of breaksYoure a night owl and youve got a big presentation at 9AM. Or youre a lark and its scheduled for 255PM, th e Productivity Minute of Doom. This is when you need what Dan calls a vigilance break.Vigilance breaks arebrief pauses before high-stakes encounters to review instructions and guard against error.Stop what youre doing. Dont just barrel forward with your brain feeling like mush. Take a moment to review everything that needs to be done and how you need to do it. A checklist made during your peak hours can really help here. One year after the Veterans Hospital Administration implemented vigilance breaks for doctors they found that thesurgical mortality rate had dropped by 18%.Now if vigilance breaks are great for marshaling your defenses against errors, restorative breaks are what you need to recharge and improve performance.Instead of reviewing a checklist, you want to get some distance from your work and relax a bit.Students that take standardized tests during their trough perform worse than those who take them during their peak. But when allowed restorative breaks, the afternoon grou p actually gotbetterscores than the morning students.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingDanish schoolchildren who take the tests in the afternoon score significantly worse than those who take the exams earlier in the day When the Danish students had a twenty-to-thirty-minute break to eat, play, and chat before a test, their scores did not decline. In fact, they increased.Whats the best restorative break? Combining the insights from many studies, Dan recommendsa short walk outside with a friend during which you discuss something other than work. And another study showed that the highest performers usually worked for 52 minutes and then took a 17 minute break.I know, I know it might not be realistic for everyone. In that case you want to make sure to maximize the break that is built into everyones schedule - lunch. It can be a big performance booster if done correctly.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingThe most powerful lunch breaks have two key ingredient s autonomy and detachment. Autonomy exercising some control over what you do, how you do it, when you do it, and whom you do it with- is critical for high performance, especially on complex tasks Detachment both psychological and physical- is also critical. Staying focused on work during lunch, or even using ones phone for social media, can intensify fatigue according to multiple studies, but shifting ones focus away from the office has the opposite effect. If you leverage breaks properly, your trough can actually bemoreproductive than your peak.(To see the schedule that very successful people follow every day, clickhere.)Okay, weve learned quite a bit about how to be more productive. Lets round everything up and learn the best time to implement behauptung changesSum upHeres the best time to get stuff doneThink-y stuff in the morning If youre reading this at midnight, youre breaking my heart.Afternoons are sluggish - but insightful Creativity peaks when you arent thinking straigh t.Night owl? Strike that - reverse itI wrote this post during the evening, but dont worry - Im a night owl. Hoot. Hoot. The two types of breaks Vigilance breaks are when you take a step back and review your checklist before an important moment. Restorative breaks are when you relax to recharge your dwindling batteries.Okay, ready to make some big changes in your schedule? Want to feel like youre making a fresh start? Dan has the right time for that as well.Yes, you could begin implementing all this tomorrow but the research shows we are actually more likely to follow through when we start on what are calledtemporal landmarks. These are natural turning points on the calendar when you can open a new mental account and feel like a new you. Best example is New Years Day, that time when most of us make resolutions - but its not the only one. There are two kinds social and personal.FromWhen The Scientific Secrets of Perfect TimingThe social landmarks were those that everyone shared Monda ys, the beginning of a new month, national holidays. The personal ones were unique to the individual birthdays, anniversaries, job changes. So plattl your temporal landmark and start fresh.Align your schedule with how your brain naturally works and time reallyison your side.Join more than 320,000 readers.Get a free weekly update via emailhere.Related postsNew Neuroscience Reveals 4 Rituals That Will Make You HappyNew Harvard Research Reveals A Fun Way To Be More SuccessfulHow To Get People To Like You 7 Ways From An FBI Behavior ExpertThis article first appeared at Barking Up the Wrong Tree.

Creating SMART Goals to Find an Internship

Creating SMART Goals to Find an InternshipCreating SMART Goals to Find an InternshipCreating goals using the SMART goal system is a technique that is often used by business professionals. It is an acronym that was believed to have been first used in the November 1981 issue of Management Review by George T. Doran and also was described by Paul J. Meyer in his book Attitude is Everything. To create SMART goals, you must first write down your goals and evaluate them to make sure they are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound. You will then follow the SMART goal process as outlined below. Specific By being specific in creating your goals, you will become much more aware of what you want to happen. In order to be specific in creating your goals, you must be able to answer the following questions who, what, where, when, which, and why. For example, if you want to get an internship for this summer, you can make your goal(s) specific by answering the following quest ions Who is involved in your getting an internship? What is it you hope to accomplish?Where do you want an internship? When do you want an internship?Which internship(s) do you want? Why do you want an internship? Measurable Measuring the progress of your goals will make it much more likely that you will achieve them. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach each goal. Establishing concrete criteria for measuring progress on attaining your goal(s) will let you know that you are on target. For example, I will research and apply for five internships this week and network with three alumni from my college by Friday. Attainable By selecting goals that are attainable, you are ensuring that you will do what it takes in order to achieve them. You may start by writing down short-term, mid-range, and long-term goals. For each goal, you can set a timef rame on what steps you need to take in order to achieve each goal. In order to attain your goals, you need to be committed to achieving them. This commitment will ensure that you will do everything it takes to accomplish your goals. For example, you want to get an internship in journalism for the summer. You may begin by looking for internship opportunities in the location where you plan to be for the summer. You can do some networking with people currently working in the field, check out online internship listings, and prospect for publications that you may work for by Googling or using your local newspaper or chamber of commerce. Realistic Creating a strategy that will help you to attain your goals will make them more realistic. Deciding to do something challenging will also make it more realistic because you will have to take action in order to make it happen. Setting a goal thats realistic and achievable will give you the motivation to make it happen. If you set a goal that is too easy to reach, you will probably lose interest and sabotage yourself from achieving your goal. Time-Bound and/or Tangible Creating a timeline for achieving your goal(s) will make it much more likely that you will begin taking the action required to achieve your goal(s) in the allotted timeframe. You also want your goal to be tangible whereby you can actually feel like you can make it happen. A tangible goal is specific, measurable, and attainable and usually, you can feel it like its already happened.

20 Ways to Have Effective Business Meetings

20 Ways to Have Effective Business Meetings20 Ways to Have Effective Business Meetings20 Ways to Have Effective Business Meetings Leist, CPO, productivity consultant and author of Eliminate the Chaos at Work25 Techniques to Increase Productivity (Wiley 2011)Meetings can consume the better part of your day and leave you wondering, What did I accomplish by attending one meeting after the next? Before you schedule or attend another meeting, consider the goals and objectives of the meeting first. Is it for informational purposes only?If so, can you obtain the necessary information from someone else?Is it because you have something to contribute? If so, do you need to stay for the entire meeting? Are you scheduling the meeting? If so, what steps will you take to ensure that it produces the results you need without the attendees feeling as though youve wasted their time? Here are 20 techniques you can implement to ensure you are scheduling, managing and participating in productive meetings.1. S tart meetings on time. This shows you respect everyones time.If you always departure meetings late, you are setting an expectation and people will arrive late.Be in your chair a few minutes before the start time.2.Show up on time. When you show up late, you are telling everyone else that your time is more valuable than theirs - combined.3.Use an agenda.Meetings that last more than 20 minutes need an agenda to ensure the group remains focused and the appropriate items are covered.4.Distribute the agenda prior to the meeting. This allows for prep time that may be necessary, rather than catching attendees off guard or risking those who will attend unprepared.5.Keep it short.A shorter meeting can accomplish just as much as one that is twice as long.6.Schedule a 45-minute meeting instead of an hour.Meetings have a way of filling the time scheduled - dont allow this to happen.Use the extra 15 minutes to accomplish another task, such as filing meeting notes, inputting tasks as the result of the meeting into your task management system, check voicemail and return a call, grab a snack or take a break7.Dont allow scope creep.Discussing an unrelated topic is one of the easiest ways to derail a meeting and will frustrate others. This is another reason an agenda is necessary. If a topic comes up that isnt on the agenda, put it on the parking lot and return to it at a later date, or address it at the end if there is time.8.Acknowledge the elephant in the room.If there is something standing in the way of making forward progress, acknowledge it up front and move on.9.Choose an effective moderator or facilitator. If this is not your strength, enlist someone to help.Someone must be responsible for keeping the meeting on topic and moving forward.10.Conduct meetings while standing. Can you accomplish just as much in a short meeting where you stand than in a longer meeting where you get comfortable in a chair?11.Listen.Show respect to the part speaking because youll want the same respe ct when its your turn.12.Stop multitasking.Establish a policy of no e-mail, texting, or web surfing during meetings. If the meeting is short enough this should not be problematic.13.Be prepared.Dont be caught off guard if someone asks for your opinion or advice. No one appreciates the person that doesnt participate whats the point of attending?14.Dont speak just to be heard.Speak only if you have something meaningful to add.People stop listening to those who speak all the time but never really say anything.15.Follow up.Most meetings are likely to create action items.Though everyone should be responsible for their own to-dos, people get busy. They might forget what they were asked to do or fail to communicate the completion. Designate someone to record action items and post them to a shared document.Someone will still need to remind others of their commitment.16.Cancel a meeting. If you are the meeting organizer and you realize that you arent prepared for it, do everyone a favor and resc hedule it.17.Can the meeting be replaced by a phone call? Ensure that every meeting you attend or schedule cant be replaced by a phone call.If a meeting is needed later as a result of the call schedule it at that time.18.End the meeting on time if not early.Never assume that you can continue a meeting after the scheduled end time you may not be aware of what attendees have scheduled next.19.Use the calendar scheduling feature in Microsoft Outlook to schedule meetings. You will save time using this feature when scheduling a meeting with those in your company where you can view their calendars. You can also use this to schedule meetings outside your company you just wont be able to see when someone is available.20.Use Doodle.Doodle did a study in September 2010 that determined that professionals spend 4.75 hours a week to arrange 8.9 meetings. That amount of wasted time translates into a Friday afternoon off each week Wouldnt that be more fun?Productive meetings are possible when you im plement these techniques. What can you do immediately to ensure that youre scheduling and managing a productive and efficient meeting?Author BioLaura Leist, CPO is a productivity consultant and author of Eliminate the Chaos at Work 25 Techniques to Increase Productivity (Wiley 2011).To learn more, visit www.eliminatethechaosatwork.com, follow her on Twitter LauraLeist or on FaceBook at www.facebook.com/eliminatethechaosatwork.Streamline your systemJust because your company has been doing something- like meetings- the sameway since day one, there is always room for improvement. Should You Highlight Failures in Your Resume

Should You HighlightFailures in Your Resume Should You HighlightFailures in Your Resume But, when you consider the benign context that the failureresume emerged it doesnt sound quite as bonkers a bedrngnision. It seems it has its roots in the mentoring protocol of one Tina Seelig, Stanford Technology Venture Programs executive director. She encourages, well empowers if we are to be accurate, all her students to create a failure resume, allowing them to embrace all their experiences. It is something that can be created alongside the typical success resume, (which we all know about), and the students are required to address their failures and understand what they have learned from them and see how they have applied that learning to help them be a more effective individual going forward. The purpose of this tool is to help students understand that failure is a crucial part of the learning process, but it wasnt explicitly intended to see the light of day that is, land on the employers desk alongside a success resume. But, this isnt to say it cant have some application in the outside world in the job seeking and personal development process. It is clear that more and more employers are seeking to assess candidates not just on their achievements, but on how they have responded to challenging situations and failures, such as the challenging nature of the modern business environment. They feel it gives them a more authentic view of the candidate, enables them to see whether theyd like to go to war with you, or see how you respond in a fire fight. Now, I am not saying that candidates should whip out their failure resumes when asked the questions about weaknesses or biggest failures, but having prepared a failure resume enables you to produce a reassuring response as you will be able to recall the most relevant failure, your key learning and how it has made you a more effective person today. So,on this basis, a failure resume can be an excellent personal development and job search tool. But, can its use be extended? Should employers ever sight your failure resume could it actually enhance an application? Now, unless asked for, I think it might be too strange, (and just a bit too ahead of the curve), for the typical recruiter to receive a list of failures in your job application, (even if it is written to the failure resume format). A time pressurized busy recruiter probably wont get it and wont have the time to get it. Theyll be looking for qualifications, achievements and experience to see how well it matches the job description. Failure resumes are interesting but potentially a distraction in this setting.Thats why if you intended to use a failure resume as some novel way to stand out, I dont think youshould pushit on employers at this stage by emailing it to them. Candidates should draw employers to the failure resume by inviting them to view the document as published in the context of a personal branded blog. You could make the invitation in you r cover letter or link to it in your success resume. Id recommend that you head up the failure resume with some context, perhaps referring to this article or Tina Seelings piece on the failure resume to put it into context.Overall, I dont think you should include failures in your resume it is too distracting. But, if presented effectively on a personal blog so that employers can choose to read at will, it may enable you to appear like a more genuine applicant, able to survive a dog fight, who can come back from failure and apply their learning to make themselves a more effective individual.Of course, this is an experimental approach to job applications, and if you use it, monitor it closely. if you think it is hindering your applications you should probably put this down as a worthwhile but failed initiative from which you have learned something new, and move on.Master the art of closing deals and making placements.
